HelpaChild is run by volunteers and supported by friends and parishioners of the Blessed John Henry Newman and St. Augustine’s parishes (St. Wulstan’s, Our Lady of Grace and St. Augustine’s Churches). HelpaChild raises money to provide assistance and education to needy children in Africa, currently Liberia and Nigeria, including payment for their teachers, and funding for necessary equipment. With the support of local priests we have 159 children at school at present, as well as 8 young people who have gone on to college.
HelpaChild was started in 2006 following the ministry in the parish of Father Sam Ofia, a Nigerian priest from the Missionary Society of St Paul.
Having visited West Africa with Fr Sam, two of our parishioners were particularly struck with the needs of children in Grandcess, Liberia, where Fr Sam had previously been based. Many children have to work each day just to help their families survive and do not have the resources for education; going to school is simply an impossible dream. And yet it is mainly through education that children can develop skills to help lift them out of deprivation, breaking the poverty cycle of No Money, No Education, No Employment, therefore No Money.
In Grandcess it currently costs £30 per year to send a child to school: £20 for the school and teachers, and £10 for uniform, books and other basic equipment.
